Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation for a proposed residential development at the rear of 3 Fordington Green, Dorchester, Dorset, was carried out by AC Archaeology during March 2006. The evaluation consisted of two trenches; 7m and 3m in length and 1m wide. The trenches were located in lawn. Both trenches revealed a deep soil overburden above natural chalk. Trench 1 contained a single chalk-cut feature, a ditch or gulley, containing medieval pottery. A large cellar under an adjacent property's garden, possibly related to brewing, was examined and found to extend under the access track to the site. The cellar was probably constructed using a 'cut and cover' technique and may be part of a listed structure. The archaeological potential of the ite is considered to be low.
