Abstract/Summary
A small trench was excavated on Friary Lane, a little to the north of Longman's Printing Works in 1939 in the hope of locating the remains of the Friary.
The trench was 20ft long, possibly N-S aligned, and revealed a wall faced with limestone, 19-20ins thick running across the trench 5ft 4ins from the south end. The wall stood upon a layer containing green glazed and roman pottery. Unfortunately the outbreak of war ensured that Roman levels were not reached and the trench was never completed.
