Abstract/Summary
Brief catalogue of Roman inscriptions and graffito discovered during 1972. This includes the following entries for Dorchester (on page 330), reproduced here in full.
14. Dorchester (SY691906). Hand-thrown black-ware base found in 1971 on the site of Messrs Applegates, 34 Trinity Street, in a late first- or early second-century context. A graffito cut after firing reads: IVN. for Iun(ii) or the like.
15. Ibid. Black-burnished ware base found in 1971 in the same context as No. 14 (above). A graffito, cut after firing on the base which was subsequently pierced, reads: SAT. for Sat(urnini).
16. Ibid. Sherd of black-burnished vessel from similar context to Nos. 14 and 15 (above). A graffito, probably complete, cut after firing immediately below the rim, reads …]ITA[…, perhaps for Ita(lici).
17. Poundbury (SY685911). Part of the lead lining of the broad end of a tapering wooden coffin-lid 97 by 67cm found in 1972, orientated E-W, during the excavation of one of the fourth-century mausolea in the Roman cemetery. A raised inscription, produced by scratching letters in the sand mould in which the lining was cast, reads: NIDNE (All letters reversed). The first two letters have probably been inverted and the inscription was intended to read: i(n) n(omine tuo,) D(omi)ne, though there are other possibilities.
