Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology duirng 1992 in advance of the redevelopment of the former Grove Garage Site, Top O' Town, Dorchester.
Three machine cut trenches were excavated across the postualted line of the Roman town defences with the proposed new building footprint. Two ditches were located and their fills removed by hand. The westernmost ditch was 5m wide and 2.3m deep with a 'v' profile. One sherd of New Forest indented beaker was recovered from the fill. The second ditch lay 12m to the east on the edge of the site, mostly under the pavement and road. These features probably represent the western and central ditches of the Roman town's defences.
