Abstract/Summary
An Archaeological watching brief was carried out intermittently from June 1995, on the site of 39/40 High East Street, Dorchester. The monitoring comprised the observation of trial trenches and trial pits excavated to examine the underlying bed rock. These trenches were dug after the demolition of no. 39. those areas that were exposed, and were not backfilled cellars, did not contain any pre-modern deposits. Subsequent monitoring of new footings, including areas of surviving undisturbed deposits between the cellars, failed to reveal any archaeological deposits. No evidence for the Roman street was encountered, although the sugested line of the road crosses the site beneath the surviving terrace to the north.
