SDO9837 - 5 South Terrace, South Street, Dorchester. Proceedings of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society.

Various works at this property were observed during June 1996. Sections exposed in the back garden showed 1.7m of topsoil overlying a light brown layer. The latter was probably the the ancient ground surface identified elsewhere in the town; it was 0.4m deep and overlay natural chalk. A well was found behind the wall at the rear of the basement. It was 8m deep with a radius of 1.5m. The lower courses were brick and the upper were a rubbly mix of brick and stone.
