Abstract/Summary

Excavation was continued at the Colliton Park site, for a fortnight from 13th to 25th August, 1962, and on fine Sturdays from then until the middle of December. Work was concentrated on the western side of the site, in an approximately 40 feet square area. In the Roman levels, limestone and flint foundations of buildings of two separate periods were uncovered, and postholes of a third building which was probably wholly of timber construction and which postdated the earlier of the other two buildings. Floors appeared to be of puddled chalk. 3 keyhole ovens were found within the stone foundations, with two further ovens unexcavated 15 feet east of the excavation area. Two large pits were also examined. Finds included 120 3rd-4th century coins, bone pins, shale spindle whorls and bracelet fragments, glass beads, fragments of bronze chain, a bronze pin with glass and coral head, a bronze spoon, etc. A further trench was dug on the presumed site of the north wall of the building uncovered in 1961, on the eastern side of the site. It revealed two small portions of masonry.
