Abstract/Summary

Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological watching brief on a small part of the new gas main which was laid along High East Street in March 2005. An 11m section outside the Corn Exchange was observed and a small number of features was found. The pre-urban soil survived intact in this area and was cut by a substantial prehistoric posthole, a possible beam slot for a Roman timber building and flint footings from another small Roman building, together with a single Roman pit containing building debris.
