Abstract/Summary

The report provides a summary of results and an assessment of the archaeological potential from the evaluation of a proposed redevelopment at Mariner’s Parade, 41 High East Street, Dorchester. Three trenches were excavated and all three produced evidence of generally well-preserved prehistoric, Roman and early post-medieval deposits. The prehistoric evidence comprised a ditch in Trench 1 and a buried land surface in all trenches. The Roman evidence was more extensive and comprised the stone walls forming the southeast corner of a room or building. There is evidence for a tesselated floor in at least one room of the building and a probable domestic well towards the rear of the property, located in Trench 2. Roman finds include some imported pottery and painted glass vessels. The early post-medieval material comprised cess and midden deposits from Trench 1 associated with 17th century pottery.
