Abstract/Summary
The evaluation of a 1.8 ha site for a proposed hospice on Herringston Road, Dorchester, comprised fieldwalking and trial trenching. five 10m by 10m square boxes were laid out for surface collection of finds. At the centre of each square, a 1.5m by 1.5m test pit was excavated by hand to the natural chalk surface.
The surface collection produced large quantities of post-medieval and modern material , together with a single Black Burnished ware sherd, a single sherd of possible LBA pottery and three flint flakes. No archaeological features were found in the testpits, but there is some evidence for a positive lynchet or post-medieval date running across the site.
