Abstract/Summary
Archaeological observations and recording were carried out by Terrain Archaeology during the construction of a new church hall at Dorford Baptist Church, Bridport Road, Dorchester (SY68889064), in November 2004. The remains of the clay and rubble of the counterscarp bank of the Roman town defences were observed in the western half of the site. The bank survived up to one meter high and was approximately 21 m wide. It appeared to run across the whole width of the site. A small part of the outer ditch of the town defences was observed to the south of the church. The evidence from this watching brief suggests that the western approach road to Durnovaria did not cross this site.
