Abstract/Summary
‘Collation of cartographic, documentary and photographic data pertinent to the archaeology and landscape history of the Sterte area of Poole in Dorset, suggests that the immediate vicinity of Sterte Close is unlikely to encompass significant archaeological deposits of an interpretable form. The area is known for its Roman coin hoard, discovered in the early 19th century, but such finds are invariably isolated and no associated deposits of a more extensive nature have been exposed, despite extensive residential and commercial development in the 20th century. There remains a residual chance of similar finds existing within the site area, but their isolated disposition would make prospection – either by trial trenching or geophysics – unreliable.’
