Abstract/Summary
‘This report presents the results of archaeological evaluation trenching and subsequent excavations carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. on land off Edmondsham Road, Verwood, Dorset. This work forms part of the predetermination requirement for a proposed residential development.
Five trenches were opened across the 0.6ha site off Edmondsham Road. The evaluation identified eight features. These were ×3 ditches; ×3 modern pits; ×1 posthole; and ×1 land drain. No significant archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the works, despite the proximity of Eastworth Farm and the results of the archaeological investigations undertaken to the south-west of the farm. Works there for the Potters Wood development sampled an area of subtle earthworks that probably represent a phase of medieval occupation and activity on the contemporary edge of the heath.
Broadly speaking, the evaluation determined the archaeological potential of the site was low. The features were sparse, modern or undated, and the total number of finds recovered was low. Only two very abraded sherds of medieval pottery were found in Trench #1 but these are highly likely to be residual.'
