Abstract/Summary

This report contains the results of an archaeological assessment carried out during October 1991 on a part of the Romano-British site at Cleavel point on the Ower peninsula, Poole Harbour, Dorset (SZ 000860). The work has been commissioned by BP Exploration Operating Company Limited under the requirements of the archaeological strategy for the Wytch Farm Oilfield Development. A total of six 1 metre square trial pits (TPs) were manually excavated within the former working width of the water pipeline and track. Two control pits (TPs 1 and 2) were excavated on known archaeological deposits between the water pipe and the northern edge of the track. The remaining pits were dug through the stone track itself; TPs 5 and 3 were aligned with 1 and 2, while 4 and 6 were located in areas away from any known deposits.
