Abstract/Summary

‘In 2021 and 2022 Cotswold Archaeology undertook two phases of archaeological evaluation of Land Southeast of Lodden Lakes Gillingham, Dorset. Phase 1 (AN0333) comprised the excavation of 13 trenches, an additional 5 trenches were excavated in Phase 2 (AN0616). A total of 18 trenches were excavated. Trenches 1-5, 12-15 and 17-18 were archaeologically sterile; artefacts (dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods) were recovered from an alluvial deposit (604) in Trench 6, but it is thought these are likely to be residual in nature. Archaeological features consisting of ditches (Trenches 7-11), and a burnt flint deposit (Trench 7) were recorded in plan but were not excavated due to localised flooding caused by adverse weather conditions. Trench 16 contained a field boundary ditch which corresponded to the geophysical survey and 19th century mapping.’
