Abstract/Summary
‘On 3rd April 2002, I visited this property in response to a call from the occupant, Mr George Moore, that he had found a well in his back garden. … Mr Moore had been excavating the fill (which appeared to date from the 1970s) himself, but he suggested he stop this for Health and Safety reasons and for the same reasons I did not climb in!
The top of the well was about 1.2m below ground level. The soil above it contained a fair amount of brick rubble. The sides of the well were roughly circular and appeared to be greensand A hole on the south-west side seemed to be the outfall of a soakaway from an adjacent property, and so presumably post-dated the use of the well as a water source. I saw no evidence to date the well.’
