SDO21150 - Land at Huntley Down, Milborne St Andrew, Dorset. Archaeological Evaluation Report

‘Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Wyatt Homes to undertake an archaeological evaluation of a 1.05 hectares parcel of land located in Milborne St Andrew, Dorset, DT11 0LN. The evaluation area was centred on NGR 380170 098120. Four evaluation trenches measuring 30 m by 2m, were positioned over anomalies highlighted in an earlier Geophysical Survey. The evaluation identified limited evidence for archaeological remains on the Site. Observations showed degrees of modern disturbance associated with agricultural activity. The results of this evaluation showed little correlation with the Geophysical Survey. The anomaly in Trench 1 corresponded with a natural hollow. The ditches in Trench 2 and Trench 3, while physically close to the geophysical anomalies, were on different alignments. The anomalies in the southern ends of Trench 3 and Trench 4 relate to natural features. Only one of the four trenches contained archaeology. Trench 3 contained a possible Early Bronze Age field boundary ditch, identified by a single sherd of pottery and some worked flint, reflecting possible prehistoric farming activity. The scarcity of archaeological features observed, combined with the recorded disturbance in Trench 2 and Trench 4, suggests that there is limited potential for archaeology present on the Site.’
