SDO21137 - Bourne Academy, Hadow Road, Bournemouth, BH10 5HS Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessment

‘Heritage Planning Services Ltd has been commissioned by HSP Consulting (the agent) to prepare a historic environment desk-based assessment (DBA) for the Bourne Academy, Hadow Road, Bournemouth, BH10 5HS (the Project Site). There is good evidence to imply that prehistoric activity occurred on the site or in its immediate vicinity. There is a considerable amount of Palaeolithic, Bronze Age and to some extent later prehistoric activity in the Study Area and prehistoric flint and pottery has been found directly on site (albeit from unsecure contexts). There is limited evidence to imply archaeology for the periods thereafter until the construction of the school itself in the early 20th century. The earlier archaeology would be impacted through development in areas not previously built upon. It may survive in areas of existing buildings, depending on the depths of the foundations, but this is much less likely as lots of activity has occurred on site. There is no impact to nearby designated heritage assets. Any surviving archaeology is not expected to be of such significance as to preclude planning permission being granted and as such predetermination investigation is not considered necessary in planning terms. However, it is recommended that evaluation be considered prior to the formalisation of plans in order to mitigate the costs of potential archaeological excavation.’
