Title Heritage Statement for Bushmead Elham Court Farnham
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2013

Abstract/Summary

This Heritage Statement should be read in conjunction with the planning application and listed building consent application. The building is a former school, converted into a museum, now divided into dwellings. It is dated to the Victorian period and the C19 by documentary and map evidence. It is Grade II Listed and is not located in a conservation area. The following phases of construction are present: Phase Period Date Description How Dated 1 Victorian 1855 The Original school Date of School Opening 2 Victorian 1884-1887 Part of building housing Bushmead Museum floorplans, OS mapping, closure date of school, the date of the purchase of the building 3 Modern Post 1975 Northeast window, partitions, stairs, first floor Dispersal of museum collection and resultant division into houses In this case there are two special characters to consider: 1. The special character of the museum 2. The special character of the school Both internally and externally there are few clues as to the function of the building as a museum. Indeed the vast majority of the museum has been demolished. Thus in many respects the special character is restricted to the exterior of the building. The form of the building as it survives is an unsymmetrical building particular to the rear and sides. The proposals respect that character.
