Abstract/Summary
‘A ground penetrating radar survey was conducted over four areas at Sort Cottage, Powerstock, Dorset. Each of the four areas is targeted over the expected locations of former buildings. These are the dairy house (centred on NGR 353260 97310), an old cottage (centred on NGR 353310 97320), the cowshed (centred on NGR 353280 97340), and an old house (centred on NGR 353260 97350). The project was commissioned by Crispin Weston. The geophysical survey was undertaken on 8 June 2018. The ground penetrating radar survey has demonstrated the presence of a number of anomalies that may relate to building remains. Former walls and foundations of the former dairy house have been identified. There are also anomalies that may relate to the old cottage, although this is considered weak evidence and could equally relate to the construction of the extant stables. The other two areas do not contain any anomalies thought to relate to former buildings. Within the cowshed area, a void has been identified. The exact origin of this void is not clear, but it may relate to a buried manhole cover or drain. Two services have also been identified in this area. There are no anomalies thought to relate to any features of note in the old house area.’
