Abstract/Summary
‘Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Siam Consultancy & Investments Ltd to carry out an archaeological watching brief, monitoring the groundworks for the construction of a residential property on land off Sackmore Lane, Marnhull, Dorset, DT10 1PR. The watching brief was undertaken from 4 October to 9 October 2018 and monitored all groundworks involved in the stripping of the site area and the footings excavation for a residential property located in the south east corner of the site, measuring approximately 226 m2. Two linear intercutting gullies, along with one ditch and one pit were identified during the initial stripping of the area and were then recorded both in hand excavated slots and sections exposed within foundation trenches. The artefactual material recovered during the watching brief indicates a Late Iron Age/early Romano-British for all of the features. While the gullies were fairly shallow and truncated, the ditch was generally well preserved and appears to have formed part of an enclosure. The pit was located within the enclosure boundary and was recorded in section of the footings excavation. These features suggest that the south east corner of the site lies at the periphery of a settlement or some other form of activity.’
