Abstract/Summary

The presence of the burials indicates that the churchyard at one time extended farther to the east than is presently the case. Documentary evidence shows that this must have been earlier than the 17th century, since a house was standing there in 1617. Contrary to expectation the only trace of the buildings which are known to have stood on the site for nearly 400 years was one large posthole. It is even more curious that the rubbish pits which were found appear to have been dug inside the building(s) and contained a rather small amount of clay pipe, bottle glass, etc. given the recorded function of the building as an inn. But it is also possible that the rubbish was buried after the demolition of one structure and before the erection of the next.
