Abstract/Summary

‘Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Lewis Wyatt Construction Ltd to undertake an archaeological evaluation of a 0.61 ha parcel of land located in Land at North Street, Bere Regis. The evaluation area is centred on NGR 385007, 095094 and comprised 5 trial trenches (measuring 25 m by 1.8 m) equating to a 4% sample of the proposed development area. The works were undertaken between the 27 – 29 March 2023. A geophysical survey informed the locations of the trenches, which targeted anomalies indicative of a possible enclosure. However, with the exception of a buried soil horizon and an undated agricultural lynchet, the results of the geophysical survey could not be corroborated by the evaluation and no archaeological features were observed within the trenches. The geophysical results may have been influenced by the presence of the post medieval buried soil horizon recorded across that part of the site, or by some other event not surviving within the archaeological record.’
