Abstract/Summary
Outline planning permission was granted by Dorset County Council for sand/gravel extraction on a 14 ha site, centred on SZ 10300 98900, at West Parley on the northern fringes of Bournemouth. Dorset County Council requested that a full archaeological evaluation of the site be carried out prior to its making a final decision. The Trust for Wessex Archaeology was contracted to carry out this work on behalf of E. G. Hoare and Penrose Associates, planning consultants during May 1990.
Previous fieldwork on heathland sites in south-east Dorset has shown that areas of archaeological significance are usually associated with deeper topsoils (Woodward, 1987). In the absence of enhanced soil profiles, subsoil features, or artefacts from the site, there is nothing in the assessed area to suggest that the application site has any significant archaeological content.
