Abstract/Summary

Two archaeological trial trenches were positioned at the rear of No. 2 North Street, Wareham. These identified evidence of pits and ditches of medieval date as well as other, less certain, features. The extent of the excavated area making the latter features more difficult to categorise. Also identified was a possible further linear, or robbed out wall foundation, containing building debris and post-medieval pottery. The archaeology was sealed by a dark soil horizon, of post-medieval date, which is considered relatively ubiquitous across Wareham. Trench 2 also had a medieval soil horizon under the dark soil horizon sealing the medieval features. Cumulatively, the evaluation showed that medieval deposits occur within the footprint of the proposed development, and there appears to be relatively little later disturbance and truncation. These deposits range in date from the late 10th century to the post-medieval period.
