Abstract/Summary

'Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Morgan Carey Architects to undertake an archaeological trenched evaluation in 32 Prince of Wales Road, Dorchester, Dorset, DT1 1PW, centred on NGR 369392 090194. The evaluation was carried out as a pre-determination condition due to its proximity to a pair of Neolithic pits identified during a watching brief in the adjacent alleyway (Wessex Archaeology 2017). The archaeological works consisted of the monitoring and recording of two soakage pits and the excavation of two machine-excavated trial trenches. The works revealed evidence of landscaping and other modern activities sealing remnants of original topsoil and subsoil in the southwest of the site. No archaeological remains of any date were revealed. However, a third trench – located in the closest possible proximity to the known Neolithic features – could not be excavated for safety reasons. The report concludes that, although the works revealed no archaeological features or deposits, there remains the possibility of archaeological survival in the areas beyond the trial trenches.'
