Abstract/Summary
‘Archaeological Research Services Ltd was commissioned by Brymor Construction to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Aviation Park West, Bournemouth Airport, Dorset during the ground works associated with the redevelopment of land and buildings to provide 31,200m2 mixed commercial and industrial space, 700m2 of retail use and incorporating ancillary support services.
The work, which was carried out between 20th November and 10th December 2020, comprised a continuous archaeological watching brief during ground works. The watching brief was undertaken by Dimitrios Katsifas, Assistant Project Officer at Archaeological Research Services Ltd and the project was managed by Lawrence Pontin, Project Manager at Archaeological Research Services Ltd.
All elements of the ground works were cleaned and recorded by hand. A small number of tree boles, and the bases of two linear features, up to 0.2m deep, associated with previous development within the airport site, and a recently demolished building were exposed during the works. Fragments of modern building material were recovered from one of these features, as well as an unstratified clay pipe stem retrieved from overburden but no other artefacts were recovered. No features of archaeological significance were encountered during the watching brief.’
