SDO16767 - Chilcombe, Dorset. A Geophysical Survey

Licensed by English Heritage under Section 42 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, a geophysical survey using magnetometry was carried out over six days in October 2013 on the interior of the Iron Age hillfort at Chilcombe, West Dorset. The survey reveals pits and ring ditches consistent with intensive occupation, while pottery in the ploughsoil indicates that this activity belongs to the Early Iron Age. Ploughing, both ancient and very recent, has obscured any archaeology on the lower slopes and without excavation it is not possible to confirm the full extent of the settlement.
