Abstract/Summary

Licensed by English Heritage under Section 42 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, a geophysical survey using magnetometry was carried out on the interior of the Iron Age hillfort at Dungeon Hill during July 2013. A small area was further sampled with resistivity in September 2013. No surface features were evident but the magnetometry survey shows a network of probable storage pits, two linear ditches and an area of activity that includes several possible roundhouses. The level of magnetic response shows the soil to be only weakly enhanced and habitation in the Iron Age is not considered to have been intensive. Later habitation is indicated by traces of rectangular buildings that may have been the source of Roman roof tiles recovered from the site in the nineteenth century (Cunnington 1900). Supplementary survey with an earth resistivity meter is inconclusive.
