Abstract/Summary
Observations and recording in 2014 during conversion of two former public houses, the Royal Oak and Gas Tavern and the Pure Drop Inn, demolition of associated outbuildings, and erection of three new buildings. In a trench in the northern part of the site a very large ditch was recorded running next to and parallel with East Street. Pottery recovered from the filling of this ditch indicated a late medieval date. In the same trench but on a slightly different alignment to the ditch was a short stretch of foundation trench for a wall of which two courses of large stones survived. Some elements of the original roof structure of the Pure Drop Inn were recorded.
