Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on the site of a proposed new car park and access path, as part of more extensive alterations to the building and its stable block. The site of the car park may have been within the precinct of Cerne Abbey. Two trenches were excavated revealing deep sequences of post-medieval and modern landscaping deposits and soils. A roughly-metalled surface was found in Trench 1, possibly the floor of an agricultural building or yard surface of probable medieval or early post-medieval date. A large ditch was also found which was probably prehistoric. Trench 2 contained nineteenth century pottery in the levelling soils and overlay the natural chalk.
