Abstract/Summary

An archaeological excavation was carried out as a final stage of a programme of investigations in fulfilment of a planning condition relating to residential development. A small assemblage of flint was recovered from a variety of contexts covering dates from the Mesolithic or Early Neolithic through to the Middle Bronze Age however none of the features could be assigned to the prehistoric period. Further evidence was found for medieval activity including linear features, pits and other deposits and 13th and 14th century pottery. Agricultural and domestic activity of undetermined length were indicated by the presence of rectilinear enclosures formed by ditches and gullies and aligned north-west south-east. Other deposits of post-medieval building material and two post-medieval walls/surfaces all aligned north-east south-west and parallel to each other were concluded to relate to the 19th century configuration of farm buildings at Little Francis.
