Abstract/Summary

'A watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a new vestry and the removal of the floors of St Mary's Church, Chickerell. Structural evidence for an earlier probably 12th century church was exposed, together with evidence for a number of later repairs and alterations. An important collection of imported 15th and 16th century floor tiles from France and the Low Countries was recovered. One hundred and twenty graves of medieval and post-medieval date were recorded: 18 in the chancel, 20 in the nave and the remainder under the north aisle and in the churchyard. A fragment of roof slate inscribed with a list of names in a late medieval cursive script was found in a medieval grave in the chancel. A scatter of mesolithic flint was found in residual contexts.'
