Abstract/Summary

'This report has been prepared by AC Archaeology on behalf of the Portland Coast and Countryside project, Dorset County Council at the completion of a project to establish a route from the Coast Path on Portlands West Cliff through the historic limestone quarries of Tout and Inmosthay. This inclorporated remediation measures to make Lano's Gully and Arch safe for public access, the opening of the Wide Street (Lano's) Tunnel, low key improvements to the quarry tramway trail and the recording and rescue of abandoned quarry crane parts' 'This project has helped to open up tramway trails which pass through part of Portland's quarry landscape which is of national importance because the stone was used in famous buildings and monuments in London and elsewhere. Some components are unique to the Portland methods of quarrying. The Tout and Inmosthay quarry landscapes are an important industrial archaeological resource. They have islands of unquarried ground which demonstrate evidence evidence of nineteenth-century quarrying techniques, numerous waste tips, partly dressed blocks with tool marks, quarrymen's shelters and stone blocks for supporting crane bases and stays.
