Abstract/Summary
'… you may be interested in the following reference to inform your knowledge of the Woodbury hill area. The reference is Calendar of Papal Letters vol xv, p. 17 (Dublin, 1978), to the effect that the pope grants an indulgence on behalf of the 'prebendal chapel' of 'Windburry', interpreted by the editor as Woodbury Hill, in the parish of Bere Ferrers, founded in honour of the Virgin Mary and 'frequented with singular devotion by the faithful of those parts' - the latter being presumably stated by the applicant (probably the prebendary of Charminster and Bere in Salisbury Cathedral) and so not altogether disinterested.'
