Abstract/Summary

A rapid archaeological appraisal was made of Higher Kingsland Farmhouse following a fire. The lower service end of the farmhouse was built with two storeys and dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. The upper end blongs to a mid 17th century rebuilding when the farmhouse followed a three-room-and-cross-passage plan. The 17th century hall fireplace retains a timber-framed and cob chimney above it. Alterations in the 19th century included moving the passage, adding extensions at either end and reversing the arrangement of upper and lower ends. Further alterations and extensions were made in the 20th century.
