Abstract/Summary

‘The County Archaeological Officer recommended a condition requiring archaeological observation and recording during groundworks on this application because of the site’s location in the historic core of Owermoigne. I visited the site on 25 May 1995. A service trench had been excavated. This was L-shaped, running the length of the east and south sides of the site, about 2m from the edge. The sections of this trench showed a cultivation soil overlying a variable sandy subsoil. The cultivation soil varied in depth from 0.4m on the east side of the site to over 1m in the south-west corner. No artefacts of any age were noted in the soil, and the developer, Mr Critchell, also remarked on the lack of pottery noticed so far. On this evidence, it appeared that the site had been under cultivation for a long period. Further visits to the work do not seem necessary.’
