Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology has carried out an archaeological assessment of the offshore section of the proposed route of a gas pipeline and storage schemes that runs from Blandford to Portland. This assessment only addresses the archaeology that lie below the high water mark. The known and potential archaeology includes 28 wrecks, 49 geophysical anomolies, 8 obstructions, 17 dead or lifted wrecks, 2 anchorages, 193 recorded losses, 30 terrestrial and 15 find spots. Theree is akso the potential for further as yet unknown wrecks and related material and for sites and derived artefacts from the prehitoric period, particularly within two submerged paleo-valleys. An assessment of significant effects has been conducted and mitigation proposed.
