Abstract/Summary

'Foundation trenches for an extension to Castle Close, Wareham, Dorset were archaeologically excavated and recorded in May 2005 in accordance with a Scheduled Monument Consent issued by English Heritage. This followed on from a desk-based assessment and field evaluation carried out in 1999. The present work consisted of observations on the grubbing out of the foundations of a former garage, the demolition of a wall and the reduction of an earthen bank, followed by archaeological excavation of the foundations of the new garage. After hand-excavation of three trenches had determined the extent of archaeological deposits, the remainder of the foundations were dug under archaeological supervision by mini-digger (with the agreement of the Dorset County Archaeologist, who monitored the site on behalf of English Heritage), as they exposed only natural deposits and Modern disturbance, except in the northwest corner, where further layers were found and recorded. Reports on the pottery, animal bones, environmental samples and mortar are included in this report.'
