Abstract/Summary

‘Gradiometer survey identified extensive areas of magnetic interference due to the previous use of the site as allotment gardens and a scatter of small ferrous objects have also been recorded. The evaluation area has also undergone a degree of ground clearance and landscaping. Despite this, a number of anomalies were identified that have cautiously been interpreted as representing possible building remains. If correct, they appear to extend southward over a well-defined terraced area but are unlikely to be present further to the south. It should be noted that these interpretations are tentative due to the magnetically disturbed nature of the site. Any or all of the responses could be accounted for by modern debris, ground clearance and landscaping. The resistance survey has detected an increase in response that appears to be contained within an area defined by the course of a wall that has been removed in the past 50 years. There are regions of presumed ground disturbance and some suggestions and trends that may relate to archaeological features. Apart from one possible wall line, there are no obvious building outlines in the data. Outside the formerly walled area, lower resistance values were encountered and no anomalies of archaeological interest.’
