Abstract/Summary

‘South West Archaeology Ltd (SWARCH) undertook a historic building assessment of the Old Forge, Mill Lane, Chetnole, Dorset to form an understanding of the development of the building and advise and comment on the proposed alterations and extensions to the building. The Old Forge is grade II listed (appendix 1) and comprises a detached house and barn. The house was the main focus of this survey, although the barn now used as stores, but formerly consisting of a stable and cart house, was briefly inspected. No evidence of a forge was found in either building. The house may be an early 19th century conversion of an agricultural building; a question that should be answered during the building works. The house is two storey under a slate roof with unusually deep eaves to the south and a cat-slide roof covering later extensions to the north. The interior fittings; doors window etc. are consistently early 19th century with the service rooms to the north being adapted for domestic use in the mid 20th century.’
