Abstract/Summary

‘In March 2006, Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation at St. Nicholas Church, Sydling St. Nicholas (NGR SY63009928), as part of the proposals for a new French drain along the north side of the church. Two trenches were excavated by hand to the east and west of the North Porch. Parts of five burials were exposed and it is likely that further graves lie within the area of the evaluation trenches and in the immediately surrounding area. These graves are not well dated but are probably 15th-16th century in date. The burials were sealed by layers containing building debris, including fragments of medieval floor tile, roof tile and window tracery. These may relate to the mid-18th century rebuilding of the Chancel.’
