Abstract/Summary
Bournemouth University Archaeological Consultancy (BUARC) was appointed by Terence O'Rourke Ltd (TOR) on behalf of Bloor Homes Ltd, to carry out a programme of archaeological works involving the Strip, Map and Sample of land at Walford Farm. The project represents the first of three phases of proposed archaeological mitigation for the proposed development site.
Three areas were excavated across the site, Areas A-C. These areas were highlighted as being of high archaeological potential during an earlier trench evaluation in response to a geophysical survey of the site.
Excavation and post-excavation work was carried out on the site between August and December 2014. The initial stripping of the site revealed a large number of pits and postholes many of which formed structural features across Area A. These features were dated to the late Bronze Age as a large quantity of prehistoric pottery was recovered from sealed and secured contexts within this area.
The project has identified a number of previously unidentified archaeological activity, representing prehistoric settlement activity.
