Abstract/Summary
‘A monitoring and recording exercise was undertaken by Arrowhead Archaeology in November 2014 on the excavation of a narrow trench for an electricity cable within the Scheduled Area of Marshwood Castle.
The area outside the moat was archaeologically sterile; any buried soil or shallow features which may have been present were removed by levelling of the ground and removal of topsoil prior to the laying of concrete hard standing forming part of the farmyard. The moat itself appears to have been backfilled in the recent past with redeposited sterile natural clay, this deposit overlain by modern dumped material and topsoil. The shallowness of the trench, combined with flooding, prevented the bottom of the moat being recorded.’
