Abstract/Summary
‘Wyndings, Plaisters Lane, Sutton Poyntz
Grid Reference – SY 7023 8422.
Iron Age and Roman occupation remains, several burials and Mesolithic flints have previously bene recorded at this property (Dorset Sites and Monuments Record – Weymouth nos 449 and 474).
I was telephoned on 9 December 1996 by Mr Calvin Eales of Southern Electric, who said that human remains had been unearthed here during his company’s line refurbishment works.
I visited the site on 10 December and met the house’s owner, Mr Emblem. He said that on 2 December, whilst digging a hole for stays for a new overhead line pole, the works crew had found a skeleton beneath a stone slab at a depth of roughly 1.5m. They had effectively left it alone, and had extended the hole to the south-west so that they stays could be put in without disturbing the burial. It was perhaps only because of a passer-by noticing the body that Mr Emblem had been told afterwards. He had not seen it himself, so could not provide many details, although he indicated that it was perhaps aligned NW-SE. Its location was at the grid reference given above (see attached plan). I could see that an area about 3m across had been disturbed by the works.’
