Abstract/Summary

A desk-based assessment was undertaken in April 1996 of an area proposed for housing development at 39-41 Dean Lane, Sixpenny Handley, Dorset. The proposed development area covers 0.26 ha, and is centred on SU 005173. There is no known record of archaeological activity within the proposed development site. The site does lie, however, approximately 50m north of a known area of medieval occupation adjacent to the Dean's Lane street frontage, dating from the 12th-13th centuries. The preservation of archaeological deposits in the immediate vicinity of the development area is therefore known. Although the development area runs up to the street frontage, the area where new housing is proposed is located a minimum of 25m west of the street frontage. This zone is generallyconsidered less archaeologically sensitive than the street frontage but still has the potential for the survival of buried remains, perhaps associated with former buildings, or 'back lot' features such as rubbish pits.
