Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Heron Construction Company Ltd, Yeovil, to carry out an archaeological field evaluation in advance of the proposed construction of a new barn on land to the south of Lower Dairy Farm, Poxwell, Dorset (centred on SY 7454 8306). The evaluation was undertaken following a rapid desk-based assessment of the site. The assessment established that important buried remains may survive within the saite of the proposed new barn, but that the site of a proposed new cattle shed within the existing farmyard had previously been disturbed. The assessment and field evaluation were undertaken following the advice of the Archaeology Service, Dorset County Council. The evaluation involved the machine-excavation of one trench, 20 m long and 1.3 m wide or 4.8% of the area to be disturbed by the construction of the new barn. The trench revealed a thin turfline lying over a deep subsoil, into which were cut two land drains, both running north-south, and a water main. The subsoil sealed a yellow brown clay bedrock representing the Wealden beds. No archaeological features or finds were recorded in the evaluation trench.
