Abstract/Summary
‘The County Archaeological Officer recommended a condition requiring archaeological observation and recording during groundworks on this application because of the proximity of a scheduled barrow (S.A.M. Dorset 237d; Dorset Sites and Monuments Record – Winterbourne Steepleton no. 32), just across the parish boundary. The D.C.C. Archaeology Service offered to carry out the work. The condition was duly attached to the consent granted by West Dorset District Council.
The site was visited by the author on 11 July 1994. The area at the south-east side of the house, where one of the two extensions was to be built, had been cleared of tarmac. A medium brown topsoil, with inclusions of flint and chalk fragments, was present across the area. This was searched, but no objects of archaeological significance were recovered.’
