Abstract/Summary

Report presents an interim statement on the results of rescue excavation Near Feltham Farm, Bourton , Dorset, funded by English Heritage as part of the archaeological works associated with construction of the A303 Wincanton to Zeals road improvements. Two stone spreads probably represent truncated smithing hearth bases of 13th-14th century date: Large amounts of pottery of this date, along with abundant smithing slag were recovered from the site. A single piece of tap slag and part of a possible crucible may also attest some smelting in the vicinityPart of a possible road surface to the east, together with a well-established right-of-way may attest a medieval lane linking Bourton and Silton, and an unusual deviation of a former field boundary could relate to access to the smithing area from this lane.
