Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was carried out at Rushmore Park, Sixpenny Handley, Dorset, during the laying of a water main on an extension to the golf course. The work was commissioned by Savills Chartered Surveyors, on behalf of their clients, Rushmore Park Golf Club.
No archaeological features were observed, in an area rich in archaeological remains, and only a very small quantity of finds was recovered, comprising three flint flakes of probable Late mesolithic/Early Neolithic date. The failure to detact archaeological features and the paucity of finds is attributed largely to the nature of the pipelaying which involved a limited area of topsoil stripping, followed by narrow trenching which precluded the observation of any substantial lengths of sections through the natural chalk and overlying deposits of clay-with-flints and topsoil.
